PowerColor AMD Radeon RX 6600 Fighter Review

PowerColor RX 6600 Fighter Review

Introduction

It seems like a week doesn’t go by without there being a new variant of a graphics card these days. It doesn’t feel that long ago that we were extolling the virtues of the affordable RX 6600 XT and today we see the launch of the XT-less RX 6600.

Like the XT before it the RX 6600 is designed around giving you uncompromising 1080P performance, although if this new RX 6600 is anything like its XT brethren it should be pretty good at 1440 too. Whilst many of you might be wondering whether the newest card in the Radeon range is going to help move the ray-tracing performance along, we have to say that not only did we find in our testing that it was similar to that we’ve seen on all of the affordable RDNA2 cards, but even AMD themselves note how Nvidia still has the edge there.

However, whilst the RT performance might be something that matters at the RX 6900 level, down here with the RX 6600 it’s something we really don’t care about. It’s the new MSAA 8x, if you’re old enough to remember when anti-aliasing first appeared and brought all but the most expensive cards to their knees. This is a card aimed at people who want to turn all the other settings up to max and get flawless performance at 1080, and even with some careful tweaking some high frame rates at 1440 too.

One area that will help you reach those targets is the inclusion of Radeon Boost Variable Rate Shading. This is all about giving you high fidelity graphics in the places you’re looking, whilst giving fewer cycles to those areas on the edge of the screen that are less important, thus boosting your all-important FPS. The list of supported games isn’t that lengthy right now, but includes all the key multiplayer titles and current favourites. Borderlands 3, Fortnite, Warframe, Overwatch, GTA V etc. It’s like FSR plus. FSR is, of course, still in place and we’ll be leveraging its capabilities in Far Cry 6.

Without further ado then let’s cast our eye over the specifications of this new addition to the Radeon range – here in PowerColor form – before looking at the card itself and then our performance results. Eyes down for a full house.
