XFX RX 5600 XT Thicc II and Thicc III Ultra Review

XFX RX 5600 XT Thicc II and Thicc III Ultra Review

Introduction

There is no denying that 1080P is still the resolution of choice when it comes to gaming. Yes if you’re a hardcore enthusiast then you probably game at higher resolutions on more expensive displays, but even a cursory glance at the Steam analytics shows that 1080P is where most people do their gaming. At the time of writing 1080P is, with a 64% market share, comfortably more popular than anything else.

AMD know this and have aimed the mid-range GPUs squarely at this juicy part of the market and made sure that any title you care to name can be run at this resolution with, almost without exception, all the detail settings at their highest.

So we’ve established that this RX 5600 XT hardware has a massive potential audience, and with its affordable price-tag it wont require you to either sleep on the sofa – “Sorry dear but I had to” – or live on beans on toast for a year to be able to acquire it. Nobody though goes for the reference AMD card. We buy manufacturer ones. XFX have had a long history of AMD cards and with their Thicc range they have combined this longevity and knowledge with a cooler which is both attractive to look at and a great performer.

We’ve got two takes on the RX 5600 XT Thicc formula in for review today, the Thicc II is the dual fan, stock clock speed version, whilst for those of you who want a little more sizzle the Thicc III Ultra has a triple fan cooler and comes with a beefy factory overclock. Which is worth your investment? Let’s find out.

Technical Specifications

Although the coolers are different with the Thicc II having two fans and the Thicc III Ultra having three, the primary difference is the out of the box clock speeds. We all know that modern GPU drivers automatically overclock the cards up to their thermal limits, so we’re curious as to whether the extra cooling and potentially better chip of the III gives more performance than the two fan Thicc II, or if you can save some money and get the same performance.
