Introduction
Adapting to new things is always a tricky decision to make. Muscle memory forms such a huge part of how quickly we can adapt to a new product and get on with the business of doing, that even slight changes can slow you down significantly. Anyone who has ever borrowed a friends laptop after years of typing on their desktop keyboard will understand how quickly you do a spot on impression of your gran typing two fingered at about 5 WPM. Your fingers, and muscle memory, just haven’t a clue what to do.
Therefore any big change to the layout of something will always force you to consider whether all future products will be designed this way and so it behoves you to learn, or if this is the motion controls in a dual-stick world. The side buttons on the original Dark Core were certainly different to the regular layout, with a large central button surrounded by other buttons on a sort of pad. Whether Corsair got a lot of feedback, or whether the sales figures made things clear we don’t know, but the design of the original Dark Core did somewhat overshadow what was otherwise an amazingly capable mouse.
Enter the revised Dark Core RGB Pro Wireless mouse, with a regulation side button arrangement married to a design which reminds us a lot of their excellent Nightsword mouse. Corsair MM500 3XL
It’s always been one of the things that makes us chuckle here at OC3D. The higher DPI the sensors are getting on mice, and thus the less you have to move them, so the mouse pads continue to get ever larger. We understand that it has become popular in these “look at my battlestation whilst I stream” days to have a uniform surface on your desk, but we move our stuff around so often due to testing things that it is unhelpful to have a gigantic thing covering our desk. We understand we’re in the minority here, so many of you will enjoy the behemoth that is the Corsair MM500 3XL pad.
It’s 1220mm x 610mm. Or, for those of you working in imperial, four foot by two foot. For demonstration purposes we put it on the repurposed dining table which forms the backdrop for our photography, and it pretty much covered it. How excited you are to have this much pad is very much a matter of personal taste, but kudos to Corsair for making it as plush, comfortable and thick as they have. It’s a seriously premium surface, and as delicious to use as it is big.
