Cougar are probably the stealthiest peripheral manufacturer around. Generally people will know of Corsair, Razer or SteelSeries. There are plenty of companies who are unknown because the stuff they make doesn't tend to be of the best quality. Cougar, on the other hand, are known only to the cognoscenti. Fantastic peripherals but it takes a particular geek to appreciate your purchase.
So far everything we've reviewed from them has been excellent, and indeed better than we might have imagined. Now we're wise to the quality of Cougar products so let's introduce a product a little further down the range than their top-end products we've seen so far.
The Cougar 550M bucks the trend of high-DPI laser sensors by going down the Optical route. We know many of you prefer the smoothness of an Optical sensor, so does the 550M live up to the high standards we've seen so far from Cougar, and does the move down the range lead to a lesser quality product?
The highlight is definitely the Avago 3988 sensor, one of the highest resolution Optical sensors on the market. Gradual firmware adjustments have smoothed out some of the rough edges we saw when this sensor first appeared a few years ago. Utilising such a quality sensor and combining it with the always popular Omron switches and a low 120g weight ticks all the boxes and should make for a fun product.
