Usually at this point we explain how good the packaging is, and how well laid out it all is. Both of those things are true, with all of the major points highlighted and enough shots of the 550M that you know exactly what is in the box. Our main thought about it though is how strange the internals are. It was almost impossible to take the mouse out without opening both flaps and stretching the cardboard more than it liked. Maybe we had a strange one.
The mouse itself comes in two colours, metallic blue and plain black, with orange highlights at the bottom of the palm and surrounding the scroll wheel. Whether the blue and orange combination works we're still not sure. It's certainly different, and if you're in the market for this particular shade of blue we can't think of another mouse that will do.
On the underside there are enormous low-friction pads keeping your movements as slick as you could hope for.
From the side you get a better indication of the contrast between the orange and the blue in this particular colour option. Away from the aesthetics the sides are easily the grippiest we've ever encountered. If you've ever found that you slip around on your current gaming mouse, this is absolutely the one for you.
The cable is well braided and fairly pliant. There is plenty of it too if your case happens to be further from your desk than normal. Lighting is orange by default although, as we'll see on the next page, it can be changed. There are three lights to indicate the profile, and one at the rear which tends to light up the bottom of your wrist.
