When your mouse doesn't look the same as 99% of the other mice available it must be tempting to hide it away behind some darkened box art, or perhaps the merest glimpse through a window. Cougar have gone the other way entirely and put the 700M in a very well designed clear box on an eye-catching orange background. The two sides slide off, and once the clear mouse part has been lifted we discover a nicely packaged alternative palm section, four weights and a manual.

The matte silver coating on the 700M contrasts well with the black and orange chassis. There is no doubt that this is a good looking mouse, once you get your head around the fact that it doesn't look like all the others. The aluminium chassis is a very bright orange indeed, but doesn't affect the weight, with the 700M being up there with the lightest mice we've tested. Don't confuse lightness with flimsiness though. It feels solid.

The sides are deeply sculpted without stretching into Logitech MX territory. The placement of the side buttons is good, with them being easy to reach, and the sniper button is particularly well placed. Cougar have put it at a 45° angle, rather than facing side on, so that pressing it doesn't twitch the pointer with the pressure. Vital to getting the fastest headshots.

The rear has two neat tricks up its sleeve. Firstly a small button press and slide action allows you to change between the default silver palm section and the smaller black on. In front of those is the space that holds the weights. It is important that any weights are right in the middle and the Cougar 700M is perfect in this regard. This excellent design continues into the cable which is both long and well braided.

The rear is adjustable for height, with plenty of travel to suit all hand sizes and grip styles.

Nice work from Cougar and not to bad on the price point, but I'm not a fan of the styling looks like something Optimus Prime would use as a cod piece.. The EVGA Torx 10 Carbon still gets my vote Quote
