The R.A.T Pro X3 Supreme Edition comforms rigidly to our rule of thumb that the more high end a product is, the more minimalist the outer packaging. It's a big box to be sure, but just flat black with a gold logo and a brief spec table on the rear.

Lifting the lid definitely invokes that sense of theatre one would hope to get when splashing out this kind of enormous wedge on a mouse. The last thing you'd want is a simple mouse in a box, and you don't get that here.

The carry case is very nice with a hard outer shell protecting a very carefully cut-out piece of high density foam, with still enough room to fit the adjustment tools as well.

As a user you would be overjoyed to see this many combinations available to you so that you can ensure the mouse is exactly as comfortable as you would like it to be. As the person who has to test all these out and photograph them I know I'm in a for a long few days.

Back in a more normal world the Mad Catz R.A.T still comes with stickers and a clear manual, although with a mouse that has this many options we'd have liked a more comprehensive set of instructions for all the options. It's a bit lightweight.

Should you ever feel that manufacturers who offer you a single alternative side plate are just going through the motions then the Pro X3 Supreme should at least make you sit up and take notice. Yes, these are all the possible options available in that sleek black box.

Speaking of lightweight, whereas the 8+ Adv tipped the scales at 153g the Pro X3 is just 111. Not the lightest mouse on the planet, but built like a tank. It certainly will last a while.
