Destiny 2 Beta PC Performance Review

Destiny 2 Beta PC Performance Review

Introduction

Destiny is a series that seemed perfect for PC gamers, a game that is primarily a first person shooter that offers “looter shooter” gameplay and was created with a community focus with several MMO-like elements.

Many will complain that the original was repetitive and grindy, but that is exactly what any MMO-style game is like, enjoyment of the game will depend on how much you like the gameplay loop and how much you utilise the community elements of the title. Thankfully, Destiny 2 also has a larger story focus, which should help to keep players interested in the title for longer.

Sadly, Destiny never released on PC, though with the launch of Destiny 2 PC gamers will finally get the chance to play Bungie’s latest game, albeit late given the delay of the PC version.

On PS4 and Xbox One, Destiny 2 will release on September 8th and on PC the game will release on October 24th, giving PC gamers a chance to see the impressions of console players before committing to a purchase and affording Bungie some extra time to optimise the PC version of the title.

PC is the ideal platform for Destiny 2, offering users the ability to play the game outside of a locked 30FPS and with precise keyboard and mouse driven controls.

Now it is time to see how well this game performs on PC. How easy are 60FPS framerates to achieve? How much CPU power does my system need? Do I have enough RAM or VRAM? Let’s find out!

Please remember that Destiny 2’s performance is subject to change before launch, though the game is much more likely to get less demanding as further game optimisations are made.

Drivers

As always, we will be using the most recent drivers from AMD and Nvidia at the time of release. This means that we will be testing this game with AMD’s Radeon Software Crimson ReLive 17.8.2 Driver and Nvidia’s Geforce 385.41 driver.

Both of these drivers come with game specific optimizations for Destiny 2’s Beta, which will give both GPU makers a fairly level playing field as we start our testing. Nvidia has had more influence over Bungie during this game’s development, giving them a clear advantage when it comes to creating early game drivers.

It is expected that both AMD and Nvidia will improve their driver implementation before the game officially launches on October 24th.
