FidelityFX Super Resolution - Performance and Visual Impact Tested

FidelityFX Super Resolution - Is it Worth it?

AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution feature is incredibly useful for Far Cry 6's playerbase, especially for those who are targeting 4K resolution or plan to enable ray tracing.

Sadly, even at 4K, Far Cry 6 is showing its CPU/memory performance limits when FSR is set to its Balanced and Performance settings at 4K ultra on our RX 6800 and RTX 3070 graphics cards, limiting the maximum performance impact of AMD's premiere FidelityFX feature.

At 4K, FSR can enable steady 60+ FPS framerates with our RX 6800 and RTX 3070 graphics cards. Better still, the image quality offered by FSR's Quality and Ultra Quality modes is high enough to be considered worth enabling, especially if you need a higher framerate.

AMD FSR VS Native image comparisons

With graphics cards like AMD's RX 6800, FSR can make the difference between 45 FPS framerates and near-steady 60+ FPS framerates when using Ultra Settings with RT enabled. That's a big performance difference.

While FSR's image quality in still images is different to a native 4K, it is not worse in all aspects. In some regards, FSR's Ultra Quality Mode is sharper than native 4K. That alone makes FSR's higher-quality modes worth considering, especially at 4K.

While FSR's Ultra Quality mode doesn't look better than native 4K in all areas, it is close enough to be worth it for the performance boost it offers. It is a little sharper than native 4K (though FidelityFX CAS can fix that for native 4K), and FSR has a little more visible aliasing than native 4K. Aside from that, it is hard to tell the difference during gameplay.

With FSR set to Quality Mode at 4K, aliasing becomes a little more visible in some areas of Far Cry 6, but overall image quality levels remain high. Even still, FSR is sharper than native 4K in some areas, though some details are less visually pleasing in still shots, like the flowers on the table.

While FSR does have some downsides in Far Cry 6 (mostly being more visible aliasing) it does have major benefits. Performance boosts can be massive, and image quality is arguably better in some cases.

Tried the game. Boring repeat of the same political drizzle the last few pushed out... The RT in the benchmark is atrocious. Just look at the people and the cars moving on the wet road towards the end. The cars tyres are ghostly blue underneath.

Dont think I lasted 20mins before uninstalling it.Quote

Thoroughly enjoying this game, the whole story and the craziness of everything in it. And it looks so good at times, reminds me of the first Farcry game which at the time was gorgeous.Quote
