Just Cause 4 PC Performance Review

Introduction

Just Cause 3 failed the make the same splash as its predecessor, launching with performance issues on consoles and PCs of that time, particularly on Radeon-powered setups. These issues amongst others prevented Just Cause 3 from being the success that it was expected to be, offering its unique brand of open-world madness, complete with the game's signature grapple hook tool.

Since then Avalanche has reworked their game engine to deliver increased performance on both PCs and consoles, aiming for a smooth 30FPS framerate on console platforms while providing an unlocked framerate on PC. Avalanche's Apex engine has even garnered enough attention to get the attention of id Software, who are currently creating RAGE 2 on the engine for release next year.

With this in mind, we expect great performance from Just Cause 4's PC version, though it is worth noting that Sony's PS4 console stays below 1080p resolutions for much of the game with a 30FPS framerate target. While Just Cause 4 undoubtedly runs better than its predecessor, it is by no means a cakewalk for modern PCs.

Sadly, Just Cause 4 is not without its issues, though we will dig deeper into these quirks as this performance analysis progresses.

It's weird that HardwareUnboxed was seeing worse performance in JC4 over JC3. He really didn't like the way the PC port was done.Quote

I have this maxed out and my Vega 64 runs it brilliantly. I've played for about 3 hours and it's fun.Quote
