Fast portable storage – Meet the Cooler Master Oracle Air

While USB thumb drives have been commonplace for well over a decade, they remain a poor solution for those who need to quickly transfer files from one PC to another. Try and move your family’s photo album to and from a normal USB storage drive, and you will likely be forced into a long wait as the limitations of your chosen memory stick become all too apparent. That’s where Cooler Master’s Oracle M.2 SSD enclosure comes in.

Let’s face it, most USB thumb drives are terrible solutions for file transfers. They are often slow, they are easy to lose, and you often need to move files off the drive and onto your computer to make the files  usable for productivity purposes, thanks to the aforementioned slow speeds of these drives. With Cooler Master’s Oracle Air M.2 SSD Enclosure, you can simply insert your preferred M.2 SSD into the enclosure, and there you have it, an SSD in your pocket.

With USB 3.2 and a 10Gbps storage interface, Cooler Master’s Oracle Air can blast past traditional USB thumb drives and make file transfers a speedy process. The drive is also fast enough for games and files to be used directly from the SSD without issue, making the Oracle Air a great tool for mobile productivity.

Like all USB storage solutions, Cooler Master’s Oracle Air M.2 SSD enclosure supports all major OS’, like Windows, Android, MacOS, Linus, iOS, and Android. The drive can even be used with an Xbox Series X/S, or PlayStation 5 for additional game storage.

Aesthetics

Cooler Master’s Oracle Air is an aluminium enclosure that gunmetal exterior finish. The drive itself has a refined, but somewhat industrial aesthetic, and looks like it would stand up well to frequent transport. This enclosure looks and feels like a product that can handle a fair number of knocks, drops, and other forms of punishment. Just what you want from a portable SSD.

SSD Installation

With Cooler Master’s Oracle Air M.2 Enclosure, SSD installation is a breeze. The Oracle air requires no screws, and SSDs can be installed in seconds. Simply place the rubber tag on the end of your chosen NVMe SSD (M.2 2230, M.2 2240, M.2 2242, M.2 2260, or M.2 2280), insert it into the Oracle Air’s M.2 slot, place Cooler Master’s Aluminium heatsink on top of it, and slide the Oracle Air’s protective aluminium shell on top.

SSD Cooling

With the Oracle Air’s sizable aluminium heatsink, Cooler Master designed their M.2 SSD enclosure to maintain low operating temperatures for enclosed M.2 SSDs while keeping the enclosure itself cool to the touch. This is not a cheap M.2 enclosure that features a mostly plastic design and can heat up to high temperatures. This M.2 SSD enclosure has an all metal shell that will keep all contained SSDs protected and cool under load.

Specifications –  GBps speeds on the go

With the Cooler Master Oracle Air being limited by the USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface, the M.2 enclosure is limited to read/write speeds of 1054 MB/s. This is plenty fast for portable storage, and a lot faster than any USB thumb drive on the market. Given the size of this storage solution, these speeds are incredible, and more than fast enough to run games, large files, and programs from this portable SSD enclosure without any issues.

Given this enclosure’s speed limitations, we would recommend that users of this enclosure do not spend their money on the fastest SSD possible to place within this enclosure. There is no reason to place a high-speed PCIe 4.0 or PCIe 5.0 SSD into Cooler Master’s Oracle Air, as speeds will be limited by the 10Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface.
