Western Digital Black SN750 1TB NVMe M.2 Review

Western Digital Black SN750 1TB NVMe M.2 Review

Introduction

Western Digital are famous for their high capacity HDDs and, if you’ve been around as long as we have, particularly their 10000 RPM VelociRaptor hard drives that were the first attempt to bring high performance storage solutions to a desktop environment.

With the release of Solid State Drives the mechanical drive was quickly relegated to being the big storage option accessed occasionally instead of the primary drive in your system, and many manufacturers took up the baton. Indeed it was a while before Western Digital really picked up the digital mantle but they now have products catering to every requirement.

Recently we looked at the first M.2 drive in the Black range and found it combined high capacity with great performance at a decent price point, and now WD are back with an updated M.2 drive in the form of the Western Digital Black SN750. This is largely a refinement of the original Black M.2 drive, with slight boosts to read and write speeds and a better heat spreader to help keep the drive performance at its peak even when being used heavily. If you’re particularly demanding a version with a supplied heat sink is available to keep it even cooler, although obviously with so many motherboards having built in covers for the M.2 drives it’s worth considering if it will fit or is even necessary. Of course a regular heat spreader version is available and that’s what we’re reviewing today.

M.2 NVMe drives hit their bandwidth peak very early on in their lifespan, so any updates will always be incremental and the first WD Black drive was already excellent. This honed SN750 drive and its 64 Layer 3D NAND scores extra points by coming in significantly cheaper than the original Black, so let’s find out if the performance is still impressive.
