Why HDDs are out and SSDs are in for gamers - 3DMARK Storage Benchmark Tested

UL Benchmarks has released a new storage testing tool for their gaming-oriented 3DMARK suite of benchmarking utilities, taking traces from various popular gaming workloads to emulator real-world gaming workloads.

Using this benchmark, UL Benchmark hopes to allow gamers/reviews to more adequately test the performance of their storage devices and allow storage manufacturers to use their tools to help optimise future SSDs for real-world gaming workloads. Currently, most SSD manufacturers aim to deliver the most IOPs or highest peak sequential data rates, but these metrics scale poorly with game loading times.

Today, we will be testing 3DMARK's new SSD benchmark with a wide range of storage devices, look at how these storage mediums perform and explain why the future of gaming storage lies far outside of the realms of HDDs.

Drivers and System Specifications

When testing UL Banchmarks' new 3DMARK Storage tests, we used Nvidia's RTX 3070 Ti graphics card with Nvidia's most recent GPU drivers. Specifically, we used Nvidia's 496.49 WHQL drivers.

Before testing, we fully updated our Windows 10 installation and ensured that no unnecessary background applications were running on our test system.

Full System Specifications

Below are the full specifications of our game testing system, which we built in mid-2020 to meet the needs of today's gaming workloads games.
