ASUS GR6 Console PC Review
It isn't very often that we see a PC which genuinely surprises us in terms of both performance and size. When I first saw the GR6 I genuinely thought it was a Gaming oriented router, not a fully fledged PC which has console killing performance. What ASUS have created here is a PC which is ideal for 1080p gaming, with console-like functionality with the addition of the GR6's "Steam Mode" in a form factor which is portable enough to take anywhere at a moment's notice, be it a LAN event, a friends house or even just from your office into the living room.
One of the most useful features that this PC has from a purely gaming standpoint is it's Steam Switch, which is placed below the PC's power button. This button allows you to boot straight into Steam's Big Picture mode, allowing you to move straight into you games and pretty much ignore Windows entirely, which is a nice if you want to have a console-like experience with your PC.
ASUS have essentially designed a console which is both stronger in terms of performance, smaller in form factor and with the full versatility of a PC. While for the price of £649.99 this PC may not be able to max out every PC game, but it will almost certainly be able to play most PC games at 1080p 60FPS with the right game settings. This PC is a beefy machine for something that can fit into a backpack, which is exactly what you need in a PC which is intended to replace a console.
The only downside of this unit is its CPU performance though it is difficult to expect more from a PC of this size and price point. Yes a desktop PC of the same price will outperform it, but with that you will sacrifice this unit's main strengths, it's size, portability, and simplicity. You cannot get better CPU performance at this size and price, especially when offering this kind of 1080p gaming performance.
Right now this PC is available with Windows 8.1 pre-installed, with a free upgrade to Windows 10 whenever the user wishes.
For the price of £649.99 and a feature set like this there are very few flaws that we can find with the GR6, it is an ideal console killing PC which offers fantastic 1080p gaming performance, produces little to no noise and comes in a form factor that is smaller than a lot of current generation consoles, which is why the ASUS GR6 has received the OC3D Silver Award.
The only thing that we would really like to change about this unit is the price, as we would really love to see this system priced at under £600, that being said ASUS have packed a lot of performance into this small form factor system, making it ideal for those who require a compact gaming PC.
