ASUS Strix GL702Z Ryzen Laptop Review

Introduction

Such has been the dominance of Intel over a couple of generations now that the majority of gaming laptops that come through the OC3D offices run a combination of an Intel laptop-spec quad core and then an nVidia GPU that fits whichever price point the laptop arrives at.

This year has seen a massive return to form from AMD, with the Zen architecture, Ryzen CPUs (particularly the Ryzen 7 range) and the Radeon Vega all being serious contenders for your cash. It seems the perfect opportunity for someone to sweep in with an AMD themed laptop and really test out how well AMD perform when there are tight constraints upon thermals and power usage.

Enter ASUS and the GL702Z. A laptop that forms part of their Strix range, but is based around a Ryzen 7 1700 CPU and the AMD RX580 GPU. We’d like to have seen a Vega56 but the RX580 is still good at 1920×1080 and, most importantly, more affordable. With a seriously attractive price point does this combination of AMD hardware produce the goods? Let’s find out.
