SK Hynix lists their GDDR6 memory as available
The company’s new GDDR6 products offer speeds that range from 10Gbps to 14Gbps at voltages between 1.25V and 1.35V, delivering much higher speeds than today’s commonly used 8Gbps 1.55V GDDR5 offerings.
One thing to note about this memory is that is a notable downgrade from Samsung’s recently revealed 16Gb (2GB) 18Gbps GDDR6 memory chips, with SK Hynix offering 8Gb (1GB) class chips with speeds of up to 14Gbps per pin. This variance in specifications gives Samsung’s offering clear performance and density advantages, though SH Hynix’s products are still a marked improvement over GDDR5 and GDDR5X.
Today’s fastest GDDR5X memory is used in Nvidia’s Titan XP, which utilises 11.4Gbps GDDR5X. Most of SK Hynix’s GDDR6 lineup offers higher levels of bandwidth per pin, making GDDR6 a definite upgrade over GDDR5X, especially when combined with the fact that this memory will be utilised by several manufacturers. GDDR5X memory has only ever been created by Micron, limiting its feasibility as an industry-wide memory standard.
With both SK Hynix and Samsung producing GDDR6 memory, it is only a matter of time before we see products utilise the standard, especially within the GPU market.
