Samsung reveals their GDDR6 memory portfolio
Samsung’s GDDR6 memory will come with capacities of 8Gb and 16Gb, offering a minimum amount of memory as the company’s largest GDDR5 offerings. This increase in storage paves the way for GPUs with larger banks of VRAM, with a Titan Xp GDDR6 equivalent offering the ability to offer up to 24GB of VRAM on a 384-bit memory bus.
Alongside the company’s already announced 18Gbps GDDR6 modules, the company will also be offering 12Gbps, 14Gbps and 16Gbps modules, allowing customers to purchase GDDR6 memory that best suits their memory performance requirements while also providing industry-leading performance on the high-end.
When compared to GDDR6 it seems clear that the day of GDDR5X is coming to an end, with GDDR6 offering superior levels of power efficiency as well as enhanced performance. Micron’s fastest GDDR5X chips run at 12Gbps, the same speeds that are offered by Samsung’s low-end GDDR6, while also providing the ability to store more memory per chip.
Samsung’s variety of GDDR6 memory will serve them well moving into 2018, offering a range of speeds and capacities to suit almost any product, allowing larger memory banks to become available when using a smaller memory bus while also enabling higher levels of memory bandwidth.
