The Outer World’s Release Date Appears and Then Disappears from Steam

Obsidian Entertainment’s The Outer World is set to release this year, bringing gamers on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC a new 3D RPG from the minds behind Fallout New Vegas, which to many remains to best of Fallout’s 3D iterations.

At this time the release date of the game is unknown, aside from a vague 2019 timeframe, but recently the game’s Steam page displayed the game’s launch date, before quickly removing the information from the listing.

This release date was August 6th, 2019, but at this time it is unknown whether or not this release date is legitimate. It has to be added by somebody with access to the game’s Steam page, adding an air of legitimacy to proceedings, but the quick removal indicates that the date is either inaccurate or that Obsidian is unwilling to make the release date public at this time.

The Outer Worlds is a large open-world RPG that is set to take between 15 and 40 hours to complete, making the game a large title, but not as large as some competing RPGs like The Witcher 3. That said, this game was developed by Obsidian Games and published by Private Division, neither of which have the money to craft an RPG on the same scale as The Witcher. The Outer Worlds will be based on Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4, and at this time it is unknown whether or not the game will release outside of Steam on PC.

At this time we think it is likely that The Outer Worlds will release on both Steam and the Epic Games Store, as Epic Games doesn’t take their usual 5% royalty fee on games sold on their online storefront.  This move would give Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division increased revenue share from game sales on Epic’s platform, on top of the already lower royalty fee structure that the Epic Games Store offers. We are not saying that the game is going to be an Epic Store exclusive, just that is is logical for the game to release both on Steam and on Epic’s retail platform.
