SD Express 8.0 puts most NVMe SSDs to shame – 3,940MB/s transfer speeds delivered!

The SD Association is pushing SD cards to all-new performance heights, promising transfer speeds of up to 3,940MB/s with their latest SD Express standard. These speeds are high enough to surpass all PCIe 3.0 SSDs and deliver levels of transfer speeds which can exceed the needs of most users.

SD Express 8.0 offers users a considerable performance upgrade the SD Association’s SD Express 7.0 specifications, adopting PCI Express 4.0 to enable a doubling of transfer rates. Add in dual-lane PCI Express interfaces, and performance levels can double again.

SD Express remains backwards compatible with older SDA standards, something which will make SD Express 8.0 easy to integrate into future devices.

The sheer bandwidth offer by SD Express 8.0 will be incredibly useful for burst photography of slow-motion video capture. This bandwidth could also facilitate high-resolution 360-degree video and support an evolving ecosystem of ultra-fast data-creating devices.

Like SD Express 7.0, version 8.0 of the SD Express standard continues to utilise PCIe and NVMe interfaces to deliver incredible performance levels, opening up SD cards to increasingly advanced markets. Strangely, this standard has brought PCIe 4.0 to SD cards before Intel could bring it to their desktop processors, something which is undoubtedly embarrassing for the CPU juggernaut.

At this time, it is unknown when SD Express 8.0 SD cards will hit the market, or when SD cards will start pushing the limits of the standard. These advancements could take years to reach consumers, but this level of performance from SD storage is incredible to say the least.
