Next-generation Intel Rocket Lake-S processor spotted with PCIe 4.0 Storage
If recent rumours are to be believed, Intel’s Rocket Lake series will be the company’s last generation of 14nm processors, offering users a new core design and Gen 12 integrated graphics. Rocket Lake will also arrive on Intel’s LGA 1200 socket, the same socket as today’s Comet Lake series processors.
Within some leaked benchmark results from SiSoftware, as uncovered by TUM_APISAK, Intel’s next-generation of Rocket Lake processors has been shown running in a system with PCIe 4.0 storage. This seemingly confirms that Rocket Lake will be Intel’s first desktop platform to support PCIe 4.0, finally bringing Intel in-line with AMD’s Ryzen 3000 series in terms of PCIe connectivity.
AMD’s Zen 3-powered Ryzen 4000 series of desktop processors are due to launch before the end of 2020, bringing the company’s second generation of PCIe 4.0 complaint desktop processors to market. At this time, it is unknown when Intel will release its Rocket Lake series of processors. An early 2021 launch from Intel seems likely, though this is merely speculation.
By the time Intel is ready to release PCIe 4.0 compliant desktop processors, SSD markers should be ready to fully utilise the standard, delivering drives which will boast speeds in excess of 6GB/s. Today’s PCIe 4.0 SSDs max out at around 5GB/s, getting nowhere near close to maxing out the capabilities of PCIe 4.0 over full-bandwidth M.2 slots.
