Silicon Motion delivers top class performance at 7W with their SM2508 PCIe 5.0 SSD controller
Silicon Motion’s latest SSD controller aims to change the high-end storage market
Say goodbye to large SSD heatsinks! Silicon Motion have revealed a new SSD controller that is more powerful and efficient than their competitors offerings. In Q4 2024, Silicon Motion will be launching their SM2508 SSD controller, a low power PCIe 5.0 SSD controller that uses TSMC’s 6nm lithography technology.
With peak power consumption of 3.5W, Silicon Motion’s new PCIe 5.0 SSD controller is much cooler running than other high-end PCIe 5.0 controllers. That means that new drives using Silicon Motion’s new SSD controller are unlikely to need advanced cooling solutions.
What’s most impressive about Silicon Motion’s new SM2508 SSD controller is that it boasts impressive performance levels. Below we can see sequential read speeds that almost reach 15 GB/s. That makes Silicon Motion’s new SSD controller notably faster than Phison’s popular PS5026-E26 controller.

With the launch of their newest PCIe 5.0 SSD controller, Silicon Motion has the potential to transform the high-end SSD market. Faster PCIe 5.0 SSDs are on the horizon, and they will be cooler running than their predecessors. That means that users don’t need large heatsinks to keep them cool. That, in turn, makes high-performance PCIe 5.0 PCs easier to build and use.
