Sony discontinues its last dedicated 4K Blu Ray Player
Sony has discontinued its last 4K Blu-ray player, and no successor has been unveiled
Sony Japan has officially discontinued its last 4K (UHD) Blu-ray player, the UBP-X700/K, signalling the company’s exit from the 4K Blu-ray market. The company has not announced a successor product, and the player now has an “Out of stock. This item will not be restocked” listing on Sony’s website.
This announcement comes months after Sony confirmed that it plans to stop producing new PlayStation game discs in 2028. Without dedicated 4K Blu-ray players, the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro are now the company’s only UHD Blu-ray players in production. However, disc drives are an optional add-on for many of Sony’s new console models. Furthermore, Sony’s consoles also lack Dolby Vision support.
While Sony still produces DVD players and standard Blu-ray players, the company has already exited the CD, SACD player and Blu-ray recorder markets. It may only be a matter of time before Sony abandons disc-based media entirely.
Sony has not listed its UBP-X700/K as discontinued outside of Japan. That said, Sony is a Japanese company. If Sony is leaving its local market, it will likely discontinue the product in foreign markets soon. While other companies produce 4K Blu-ray players, Sony’s exit from this market is big. Sony was a key developer behind the Blu-ray standard. Their exit is a bad sign for the market as a whole.
