Sony kills physical disc-based PlayStation games citing “consumer preferences”
Sony plans to stop selling disc-based PlayStation games in 2028
Sony has officially confirmed that it plans to stop producing new PlayStation game discs in January 2028. Newly released games will only be available in “digital formats”. This means either through the PlayStation Store or as a “physical” (not really…) download code in a box.
With this announcement, Sony claims it is adapting to consumer trends. Digital media has long overtaken physical discs as the most popular gaming medium. Removing game disks as an option simplified things for Sony, as all games will be delivered in the same way. This should also make “physical” games cheaper to produce, since none will require discs to be manufactured.
In response to shifting trends in consumer preference, new games will be released on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only
As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.
This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.
We’ll continue to prioritize our resources to drive innovation in how players can access games and provide choices as to where players prefer to purchase new games, whether that’s at retailers or PlayStation Store. We remain committed to delivering a world-class gaming experience to our fans and we thank you for your continued support.

Has Sony’s planned PlayStation 6 handheld killed game discs?
Sony is reportedly building a PlayStation 6 handheld, and no handheld console can be large enough to utilise Blu-ray discs. Sony’s next-generation PlayStation 6 console could be a disc-free platform, though the console’s higher-end non-handheld version may feature a disc drive for backwards compatibility and Blu-ray playback.
The death of the PlayStation disc will come around the rumoured arrival of Sony’s next-generation console. This could mean that the PS6 could be Sony’s first mainline console to lack support for disc-based media. Sony’s planned gaming future is digital-only. Sorry disc-lovers, but the death of physical PlayStation media is coming.
