Samsung launches their first 60TB SSD and teases a new 120TB model

Samsung launches their 61.44 TB BM1743 SSD and teases larger models

Following Solidigm and Western Digital, Samsung have become the third company to release a 60TB-class SSD with their new BM1743 SSD. This new SSD will arrive in two forms, a U.2 model with a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface for traditional servers, and a E3.S model with PCIe 5.0 x4 for more storage dense systems.

Both models feature sequential read speed of 7.2GBps and slower sequential write speeds of up to 2.0GBps. These SSDs are read-focused drives, with a write endurance rating of 0.26 drive writes per day (DWPD) over five years. It can handle up to 1.6 million 4K random reads and 110,000 4K random writes for random operations.

Samsung’s new BM1743 SSDs users the company’s 7th generation 3D V-NAND. 61.44TB models of their BM1743 are now available. For those who want more storage, Samsung have teased possible 120TB-class versions of this drive. Yes, Samsung may be releasing a HUGE 122.88TB BM1743 series SSD!

Samsung’s new BM1743 SSD uses Samsung’s proprietary SSD controller tech and the company’s 3D NAND. This is basically an all-Samsung SSD targeting customers that want to maximise storage density. With 60TB of storage on a single drive, this new SSD from Samsung is ideal for such scenarios.

Currently, the pricing of Samsung’s 60TB BM1743 is unknown. However, given the limited number of drives with this level of density, we can expect it to be expensive. For example, Solidigm’s 61.44TB D5-P5336 SSD can cost almost $7,000.
