Squadron 42 has been delayed to 2026 despite being “feature complete” in 2023
Squadron 42 may be “feature complete”, but that doesn’t mean the game is close to launch
Star Citizen hit Kickstarter in 2012, and we still have no clue when that game will be released. Squadron 42, what was originally Star Citizen’s single-player component, is now targeting a 2026 release date. The game is now in the “polish” stage of production, with developer Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) promising gamers “action-packed space combat, grand cinematic storytelling and incomparable scale and fidelity.”
CIG first said that Squadron 42 was “feature complete” in 2023, making the game’s 2026 release announcement disappointing for fans. Many expected a 2025 release window, but sadly, this will not happen.
Squadron 42 is based in the Star Citizen universe. It will feature an all-star cast that includes Mark Hamill, Eleanor Tomlinson, Gary Oldman, John Rhys-Davies, Sophie Wu, Jonathan Bailey, and Henry Cavill. The game has been in development for 12 years, and expectations are high for the upcoming space combat game. below is the gameplay footage for Squadron 42.
Squadron 42 is an incredible-looking game, though it remains to be seen how good the final game will be when it launches. The hype around this game is huge. As such, it is hard to see everyone being pleased with the final product. Regardless, it cannot be said that CIG hasn’t had enough time or funding to create a great game. I anything, it could be argued that CIG has spent too much time on one project.
