Whenever a new processor or chipset is launched we always have to make the decision about which we’re going to use first. Obviously we’d like to use a mid-range option wherever possible. However, we would only know what was in the middle once we’d tested them all, and once we’d tested them all, it’s too late.

For the Intel Core Ultra 200S processors we knew in advance that the design wasn’t performance focused. Instead Intel have sought, with success as you’ll have seen from today’s review, to focus on efficiency. So much so that it almost – on paper at least – doesn’t matter which motherboard we start with as they all should be more than good enough.

If you are familiar with MSI range of motherboards then forgive us for going over old ground. MSI split their motherboard range into three main categories. At the bottom we have the MAG ones. In the middle the MPG models. At the flagship end are the MEGs. Obviously all things are relative. A base MAG model will still be better than one which entirely eschews any naming conventions. It also speaks to how quickly Intel tick through chipsets that this Z890 model comes only 6 years after the Z390 Ace.
