Microsoft blocks Windows 11 update on PCs with Ubisoft Games over stability concerns

Microsoft halts Windows 11 24H2 update over compatibility concerns

Microsoft has halted the rollout of their Windows 11 24H2 update on PCs where Ubisoft games are installed. Users have reported PCs becoming unresponsive and crashing after the update when playing certain games. Bleeping Computer has reported that games like Assassin’s Creed, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, and Star Wars Outlaws are affected.

Thanks to Microsoft’s compatibility hold, Microsoft has delayed the rollout of their 24H2 update on PCs where affected games are installed. Users with this update should roll back to Windows 11 23H2 if they are experiencing issues playing games. Currently, it is unknown what’s causing these compatibility issues.

Below is what Microsoft had to say about the issue.

After installing Windows 11, version 24H2, you might encounter issues with some Ubisoft games. These games might become unresponsive while starting, loading or during active gameplay. In some cases, users might receive a black screen. The affected games are:

  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
  • Assassin’s Creed Origins
  • Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
  • Star Wars Outlaws
  • Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

– Microsoft

Microsoft and Ubisoft are currently working on a solution that will allow affected games to run on Windows 11 24H2. As of now, it’s unknown if the problem lies with Ubisoft for Microsoft. However, the fact that a Windows update is breaking game support implies that the problem is on Microsoft’s side. Regardless, this isn’t a good look for Microsoft, as issues like this erode gamers’ trust in Windows.
