AMD 7 GHz Zen 6 Clock Speed Target “Confirmed” – Leaker Claims

AMD targets 7 GHz clock speeds with its Zen 6 Ryzen Desktop processors

According to a report from Moore’s Law is Dead, multiple sources within AMD have confirmed that the company is targeting clock speeds of 7 GHz with its Zen 6 Desktop “Olympic Ridge” CPUs. This represents a HUGE increase over today’s Zen 5 Ryzen 9000 series CPUs, which can achieve boost clocks of up to 5.7 GHz.

Currently, the final clock speeds of AMD’s Zen 6 CPUs are not yet known. Simply put, AMD needs to test its Zen 6 silicon and determine how fast it can make its next-generation retail products operate. AMD’s Zen 6 Ryzen CPUs are due to launch next year. Now that Zen 6 silicon is coming out of TSMC’s fabs, AMD can test their silicon and see how it performs. The results of this testing will determine how fast AMD’s Zen 6 CPUs will be.

7 GHz is AMD’s target, but can they achieve it?

Moore’s Law is Dead stated that 7 GHz is “kind of the middle of where they’re trying to achieve.” This means that AMD’s Zen 6 silicon could overperform or underperform. Even at the lower end of AMD’s estimates, clock speeds well above 6 GHz are reportedly expected.

If AMD can boost their CPUs to 7 GHz, their next-gen Ryzen CPUs will have boost clocks that are 22.8% higher than their predecessors. That’s a massive boost in single-threaded performance. Add on other architectural benefits, and AMD’s Zen 6 CPUs could be incredibly fast compared to their Zen 5 counterparts.

Okay. So with that said, let me just summarise exactly what I’ve heard about Zen 6 clocks and release dates. I actually have a lot of information here.
Um, basically what I’m told is that they are, without going into detail, they’re definitely achieving 6.4 GHz or higher and the goal is above 7 GHz.
And I say that because it’s not like when I say 7 GHz, there’s like there’s not like multiple sources talking to me and going, “Oh, hopefully we’ll get between six and seven.” And then I’m click baiting by going for, you know, saying 7 GHz. No, 7 GHz is actually kind of in the middle of where they’re trying to achieve, by the way. Um, so I think, like I said before, you can take it to the bank well above 6 GHz. A lot of people think they’ll achieve seven. If they don’t, though, I think above 6.4 most likely. So again, I’m not 100% saying the exact clocks, but that’s because, you know, they don’t know until they know. Like for example, Zen 4 I believe was targeting 5.5 gigahertz and they hoped maybe 5.9 or something and they ended up achieving 5.7. So they can overperform too. It’s just know that when I say 7 GHz, it’s in the middle of the top goal and what they’re sure they’ll achieve already. It’s it’s not at the top end. And so I that’s why I say it is fair for me to say Zen 6 targets 7 GHz because it’s actually targeting at least that.

How can AMD achieve 7 GHz with Zen 6?

Two factors are behind AMD’s rumoured Zen 6 CPU clock speeds. These factors are lithography and design. AMD’s reportedly using TSMC’s N2X node to create some of its high-performance Zen 6 CPUs. Today’s Zen 5 CPUs are being built using TSMC’s N4 node. AMD’s moving from TSMC’s N4 node, skipping their N3 node, and using a performance-optimised version of their N2 node (N2X instead of N2/N2P). Note that this gives AMD’s Zen 6 CPUs one of the largest node jumps in AMD’s history.

AMD uses leapfrogging design teams to create its Zen CPUs. As such, Zen 6 is being built by AMD’s Zen 4 design team. Note that AMD’s Zen 4 CPUs featured much higher clock speeds than their Zen 3 counterparts. That expertise is being applied to Zen 6. Through higher clock speeds, AMD hopes to achieve higher levels of single-threaded and multi-threaded performance. With Zen 6, AMD wants to deliver faster cores, not just more cores.

If this report is true, Zen 6 will be an exciting launch for AMD. Higher clock speeds will allow AMD to achieve higher performance levels in all workloads. That’s good news for gamers, creators, and workstation users.
