Apple has “given up” on its Vision Pro – report claims

It sounds like Apple is giving up on virtual reality, at least for now

According to a report from MacRumors, Apple has “given up” on its Vision Pro VR headset following disappointing sales. The outlet called the VR headset’s recently released M5 version a “flop”, stating that the model “failed to revitalise interest in the device”.

Apple’s 2025 M5 Vision Pro headset upgraded the CPU from an Apple M2 to an M5. The headset also saw its maximum refresh rate increase from 100Hz to 120Hz, and its battery life increased by about 30 minutes. Regardless, the headset remained heavy and incredibly expensive. With an asking price of $3,499, the device was never going to sell well.

MacRumors reported that the headset has sold only around 600,000 units and that there was an “unusually high percentage of returns.” Employees who worked on the device have reportedly been moved to other teams.

Apple reportedly has no plan for a Vision Pro successor. Apple has given up on plans to release a more affordable version of its VR headset, or a more lightweight model. The company will continue to sell its Vision Pro headset and has not discontinued the device.

Given the high-power nature of the Vision Pro, the device’s technology cannot be utilised in smaller devices. While Apple is reportedly working on smart glasses, Apple’s Vision Pro tech is not transferable to the device. Simply put, the tech draws too much power for such a device. There’s a reason why the Vision Pro is as heavy as it is.
