Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus 2 devs promise “substantial optimisation update”

Bulwark Studios is working on a major optimisation update for Mechanicus 2

As a Warhammer 40,000 fan and a fan of strategy games, Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus 2 is a game that is practically perfect for me. That said, when I played the game at launch, I had to suffer through major performance issues. Even with different GPU drivers or entirely different GPUs, the game ran poorly. This is one of the reasons why the game has a “Mixed” review rating on Steam. Like many players, I am patiently waiting for an optimisation update for Mechanicus 2.

When I loaded up Steam this morning, I was glad to discover that Mechanicus 2 was updating. Sadly, it wasn’t the big optimisation update that I was waiting for. However, Bulwark Games did have a progress update. A more “substantial optimisation update” is coming. However, we have no firm release timeframe for this update. That said, the developer does say that the update is a “priority” for the developer.

First, thank you to everyone who has reported issues and shared feedback since the launch of Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus II.

We know we’ve been quiet since launch. That hasn’t been because we’re ignoring the issues being raised – it’s because the team has been focused on investigating, fixing and preparing updates as quickly as possible.

We’re painfully aware that many players are experiencing performance issues, including lower than expected frame rates and unusually high GPU utilisation. Improving performance is a critical priority for us, and work is continuing on a more substantial optimisation update.

Today’s update addresses a number of commonly reported bugs and includes a small FPS improvement for many players. However, we want to be clear that this update is not intended to resolve the main performance concerns raised by players. That work is ongoing and will require a further update.

We understand how frustrating these issues are, and we appreciate your patience while we work to address them. We’ll share more details on the optimisation update as soon as we’re able.

(Strangely low GPU power use on an Nvidia RTX 5080 at 4K…)

With the game’s latest update, we can confirm that our performance issues persist. While performance is slightly better, our RTX 5080 still does not reach its power limit, and its performance can dip below 60 FPS on minimum settings at 1080p (even with DLSS). We have also tested the game on a Radeon RX 9070 XT and can confirm it still runs poorly but scales better at lower resolutions and settings. This means that we can play the game at 60 FPS with the right graphical settings on this GPU. That said, the game’s performance is still subpar.

Gameplay-wise, I have enjoyed Mechanicus 2. However, its performance issues have forced me to wait before investing time in finishing the game’s campaigns. Four weeks have passed since the game’s launch, and the game’s performance issues remain unaddressed. That said, at least we now have a firm confirmation that a “substantial optimisation update” is coming.
