PC gamers can now build their own Steam Machines with AMD Radeon GPUs

Valve has updated SteamOS to greatly improve its hardware support, allowing PC gamers to build their own Steam Machines. With SteamOS 3.8, the OS now includes a first-time setup and support for AMD GPUs. This gives PC builders the option to craft a Steam Machine using their spare parts, or construct something stronger than Valve’s official Steam Machine.

Valve’s Pierre-Loup Griffais has confirmed that support for more GPUs is planned. This means that SteamOS will, eventually, support Nvidia and Intel graphics cards. As of now, you can only build a Steam Machine using AMD Radeon graphics cards. Note that Intel CPUs are supported.

Why just Radeon?

Valve’s SteamOS was built for Steam Deck and expanded for Steam Machines. Both of these devices use AMD CPUs and Radeon graphics. Right now, SteamOS is only optimised for AMD Radeon GPUs, and it will take time to add support for alternative hardware. Valve has been working hard to improve AMD’s open-source Linux drivers, making AMD hardware the best option for gaming on SteamOS.

We've just updated the SteamOS installation image to 3.8. This update improves compatibility with certain modern systems and includes a first-time setup.help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view…If you have an AMD GPU, you can build your own Steam Machine now! More GPU support being worked on.
