Meta has “Multiple Next-Generation (VR) Headsets” in the works
Meta confirms plans for multiple future VR headsets, asking fans to wait for Meta Connect
Earlier this year, Meta seemingly pivoted away from the VR market and the Metaverse by closing multiple VR-focused gaming studios. Now, Meta’s CTO, Andrew Bosworth (via UploadVR), has confirmed that Meta has “multiple next-generation (VR) headsets” in the works.
Alongside his hardware confirmation, Bosworth also said that fans should “stay tuned for Connect”, Meta’s major VR event. This suggests that Meta could unveil its next VR headset this September. Meta Connect is currently scheduled for September 23rd-24th.
When asked, “Did you guys give up on VR?”, Bosworth had this to say;
No.
We’ve talked about this a lot this year – kind of an odd comment.
We’ve just updated the user interface profoundly for the first time in years. We’ve talked openly about the fact that we’re building multiple next-generation headsets.
We did get ourselves into more sustainable shape, that’s true. But no. We continue to invest quite a bit there.
So, stay tuned for Connect and we’ll have more to share then.

Meta launched its Quest 3 VR headset in October 2023, giving it plenty of time to develop a next-generation headset. Could a Quest 4 be on the horizon? If so, how much will this headset cost? It’s probable that the headset will be ludicrously expensive given today’s RAM/NAND prices. That said, Meta’s about to get a new VR competitor with Valve’s Steam Frame, and you can be sure Meta would like to compete with this new headset by introducing a new Quest model.
