Xbox releases major software fix following recent server outage
Microsoft issues fixes for the causes of the Xbox server outage
Microsoft’s Xbox CTO, Scott Van Vliet, has issued a lengthy statement on the company’s planned fix for the issues behind the recent Xbox outage. Recently, an outage impacted game license checks, preventing many Xbox players from accessing their games.
Team Xbox is working on a series of fixes to prevent the same situation from happening again. This includes a client-side bug fix that is rolling out to Xbox users now. Xbox has also taken ownership of the underlying licensing services responsible for the outage, giving it deeper control. Xbox engineers are actively hardening these services and infrastructure. Future service updates should make outages of this nature much less likely, and lessen their impact if any single service suffers any issues.
Vliet’s post below talks about the root cause of the recent Xbox games outage, and how a server-side issue and a client-side bug compounded to make many Xbox players unable to access their games.

In his post, Vliet states that Xbox’s engineering and operations teams are working to improve the reliability of Xbox services. Furthermore, he has confirmed that Xbox will have more updates to share in the “weeks and months ahead”, detailing “great new features for players” and “quality-of-life” updates.
