Nintendo enables VRR support for Switch 2’s TV mode

Nintendo has officially added VRR support to Switch 2’s TV mode

With update 23.0.0 for its Switch 2 console, Nintendo has officially added VRR support to the console’s TV mode, requiring both system and dock updates to enable it. Previously, VRR support was only available in the Switch 2’s handheld mode. This means that Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support was only available in handheld mode, preventing TV mode users from accessing this benefit.

With VRR, screens can adjust their refresh rates to match the output of connected hardware. This prevents screen tearing and delivers a smoother gaming experience than gaming on screens with static refresh rates. With VRR, Framerate dips are less noticeable, and games with highly variable framerates appear much smoother. For Switch 2, TV mode VRR requires a compatible TV, an updated Switch 2, an updated Switch 2 dock, and supported games.

Ver. 23.0.0 (Released 10 September 2026)

Added support for VRR (variable refresh rate) in TV mode.

  • If supported by both the software and your TV, the refresh rate output will be adjusted based on the software’s performance.
  • Nintendo Switch 2 dock update is required to enable this feature.

Switch 2 Update Release Notes

Switch 2 games will require updates to support VRR mode in TV mode

Existing Switch 2 games will not support TV mode VRR without an update. Adding VRR mode to TV mode has required an extensive software rework from Nintendo. Game developers will need to ensure that their software is VRR mode compliant. If not, their games will run without VRR mode enabled.

Overall, this is a solid upgrade for Nintendo’s newest console. VRR is already supported on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles, and with Switch 2 support arriving, all modern gaming platforms now support VRR. That’s great news for gamers, as VRR is a killer feature.
