Galax unveils the world’s first dual 12V-2×6 RTX 5080 GPU
Galax gives its users options with its dual 12V-2×6 RTX 5080 HOF Extreme
Galax has officially released the first RTX 5080 graphics card that features dual 12V-2×6 power connectors. While both connectors can reportedly be used simultaneously, Galax intends for these connectors to give gamers options. Gamers can use the bottom power connector for a hidden-cable PC aesthetic or the top connector for more traditional cable management.
If users choose to use the “hidden cable” route, Galax has supplied a cover for their RTX 5080 HOF Extreme’s other 12V-2×6 power connector. This option gives PCs an ultra-clean aesthetic. This cover is magnetic. With a 400W power limit, this graphics card’s power requirements fall well below the 12V-2×6 connector’s 600W rating. As such, this GPU doesn’t need to use both power connectors to be powered safely.
You don’t need to use both power connectors, but you can
According to the Chinese review site Gamersky, Galax’s RTX 5080 HOF Extreme can be powered by either of the GPU’s 12V-2×6 power connectors or both. This means users can use both power connectors and benefit from current sharing, reducing the load on each connector. This dramatically lowers the risk of connector overheating or melting. However, Galax’s website markets these connectors as alternatives. Using both connectors isn’t required.
Both interfaces are connected to the same power supply path. Connecting either interface alone is sufficient to power the entire card, and connecting both ports simultaneously for current sharing/split-power supply is also supported.
For the most part, the Galax RTX 5080 HOF Extreme is a fairly normal high-end RTX 5080 GPU. It features a factory overclock and 16GB of 30 Gbps GDDR7 memory. It also uses a 4-fan cooling solution and a powerful 20-4 power delivery system. Galax markets this GPU with a 2655 MHz boost clock in gaming mode and a higher 2805 MHz boost in OC mode. Note that Nvidia’s reference boost clock speed for its RTX 5080 is 2617 MHz.
