96-core AMD Genoa-X processor goes on sale in China with over 1GB of L3 cache

AMD’s unreleased Genoa-X 96-core Zen 4 processor has become available in the Chinese second hand market

Over in the Chinese website Goofish, an engineering sample of AMD’s EPYC 9684X processor has become available for sale, an unrelease Genoa-X processor that boasts AMD’s V-Cache technology and 1152MB of L3 cache. That’s right, a processor that features over a GB of cache.

AMD’s Genoa-X processors are due to launch later this year, bringing EPYC customers a V-Cache upgrade for their Zen 4 processors. With the addition of V-Cache, AMD’s Genoa-X processors can accelerate a huge variety of workloads, with AMD focusing their marketing on technical computing and databases.

The alleged Genoa-X CPU sample that is for sale in China is said to be “almost new” and working. Like other engineering samples, the resale of this unreleased AMD processor is not permitted, and engineering samples are typically marked and numbered to allow AMD to track where specific engineering samples were sent. Since this retail listing displays this CPU’s QR code clearly, it is likely that AMD will be able to track down the hardware partner that should have possession of this processor and take action against them.

AMD’s Milan-X Zen 3 V-Cache processors proved to be hugely popular with certain buyers, and there is huge interest in their next-generation Genoa-X counterparts. While AMD has not revealed a firm release date for their Zen 4 Genoa X processors, it is likely that they will be launched sometime within the next few months. With V-Cache enhanced Ryzen 7000 series processors already being available, it is likely that their EPYC counterparts are almost ready for launch.
