AMD launches 2nd Gen EPYC processors with record-breaking performance
When compared to Intel’s offerings, AMD plans to deliver its customers more performance and a lower cost of ownership, offering an estimated 25-50% reduction in their product’s total cost of ownership (TCO) when compared to competitive Intel offerings. Â
At their launch event, AMD confirmed that both Google and Twitter have announced new 2nd Generation EPYC processor deployments, with Twitter reducing the TCO of its data centers by 25% thanks to the change. EPYC processor platforms are now available from HPE and Lenovo.Â
On the high-end, 2nd Gen EPYC processors will offer users up to 64 cores, 128 threads and 256MB of L3 cache. AMD’s highest-end EPYC processor, the EPYC 7742, will ship with 1Ku Pricing of $6,950. 48-core, 32-core, 24-core,16-core, 12-core and 8-core models will also be available.  Â

When compared to AMD’s last-generation EPYC offerings, AMD promises to deliver up to 23% more instructions per clock per core (IPC) and up to 4x more L3 cache than their last-generation processors.
AMD has also confirmed that their 2nd Generation EPYC processors are getting adopted by Microsoft’s Azure platform, Cray, Dell and other unannounced partners. EPYC 2nd Generation processors will also offer users support for PCIe 4.0, support for 8-channel DDR4 memory at 3200MHz.Â
At launch, AMD is partnering with 60 companies to ensure wide adoption of their latest server-grade products. Â
