AMD Ryzen 9000 105W modes to become “official” with new AGESA update
AMD is adding 105W modes for their Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X CPUs with their 1.2.0.2 AGESA update
Last week, MSI released new BIOS updates for their AM5 motherboards that adds a “TDP to 105W” setting to their motherboards. This setting enables increased performance from AMD’s Ryzen 5 9600X and Ryzen 7 9700X CPUs by increasing their power limits from 65 watts. This enables p to a 13% performance boost in Cinebench R23. Now, it has been revealed that this feature is coming to all AM5 motherboards.
According to Hassan Mujtaba, AMD will be adding this feature to their AM5 platform with their AGESA 1.2.0.2 update. Using this feature will not void the warranty of your Ryzen 7 9700X or Ryzen 5 9600X CPU. This mode is approved by AMD, and will give a performance boost to any user who can handle the heat output of this higher TDP value.
MSI’s implementation appears to be the company’s own version of this planned AGESA feature. With their early feature release, MSI are stepping ahead of their competitors. Other motherboard manufacturers that will wait for AGESA 1.2.0.2 to launch this new 105W mode. The release date of AGESA 1.2.0.2 is unknown.

With this new 105W mode becoming an “official” AMD option, Ryzen 9000 users can rest assured that their CPU is safe running at this higher power setting. These higher power settings can enable notable performance boosts in multi-core workloads. After all, these are the workloads that demand the most power.
All in all, AGESA 1.2.0.2 will give Ryzen 9000 5/7 series CPU users a “free performance boost” option. While it will not have a huge impact on single-threaded workloads, it should dramatically boost CPU performance in multi-core/all-core workloads. That’s great news for workstation users, and creators.
