AMD’s Ryzen 3000 series to support faster memory than previous generations
With Ryzen 3rd Generation, codenamed Matisse, AMD hopes to address these issues, with the company’s early Zen 2 demos confirming the company’s increased single threaded performance. Now, it looks like things are also getting fixed on the memory side, with recent leaks suggesting that AMD’s Ryzen 3000 series of processors will support speeds of up to 4400MHz.
This information comes through Videocardz and momomo_us, two well-renowned PC hardware leakers. Both report that AMD’s Ryzen 3000 series of Matisse processors will support 3200MHz memory out of the box alongside speeds of 3466MHz, 4133MHz, 4200MHz, 4266MHz and 4400MHz in OC mode. For context, AMD’s Ryzen 1st Generation processors supported 2666MHz out of the box, while their 2nd Generation 2000 series processors supported 2933MHz.
AMD’s increase in baseline DDR4 performance is fantastic news for PC gamers, as 3200MHz DDR4 memory is practically guaranteed to work with Ryzen 3rd Generation processors. Faster speeds will be possible, though functionality will not be guaranteed. That said, 3200MHz memory was commonly used on Ryzen 1st and 2nd Generation processors, making it likely that at least 3466MHz and 3600MHz will be reasonably easy to achieve on Ryzen 3rd Generation processors.
With earlier generations of Ryzen processors, memory overclocking has been a key factor when it comes to Ryzen’s gaming performance, with higher memory speeds resulting in reduced core-core latencies and other performance benefits. Support for faster memory modules can only be seen as a good thing for AMD’s Ryzen 3000 series processors, though it remains to be seen how these changes will impact system performance.
