ASRock issues “No Boot & CPU Damage incidents on AMD Platform” update

ASRock issues update on CPU “no boot” and “Damage” reports

ASRock has issued a fresh update on reports of CPU “no boot” issues and “CPU damage incidents” on AMD’s AM5 motherboard platform. The company claims to be taking these reports seriously, and is working with affected users.

ASRock has confirmed that their 3.20 BIOS updates have addressed CPU booting issues on AM5 motherboard platforms. ASRock states that this issue only impacts some AMD Ryzen CPUs.

The company has also worked with a user who had a system with a CPU that “showed burn damage.” ASRock found no damage to their motherboard’s VRMs and found that the motherboard was operating within spec. Furthermore, after cleaning the motherboard, the board passed long-term stress testing with a different CPU. This suggests that a faulty CPU caused this damage incident.

Below is ASRock’s full update.

Update on No Boot & CPU Damage incidents on AMD Platform

TAIPEI, Taiwan, 25th March, 2025 – We are aware of a number of cases where some AMD CPUs have boot issues with specific BIOS versions, and case with ASRock motherboard involving damaged CPU. We are taking these incidents seriously and have reached out to many of the affected users to gather information. We have obtained some of the motherboards for thorough inspection.

  1. A retrieved motherboard was in a system where the CPU showed burn damage. When inspecting this motherboard, we found that the motherboard does not have obvious damage nor burn marks around the VRM area. Measurements of the motherboard are also within spec. After cleaning and removing debris from the CPU socket, without further repair, the motherboard can boot up successfully with original onboard BIOS. It also passed long-term stress tests.
  2. With some BIOS versions, we have noticed some systems are not being able to boot with random 9000-series CPUs. BIOS 3.20 fixes this issue by improving memory compatibility.

The release of BIOS 3.20 is not related to the CPU damage issue. All BIOS versions including earlier iterations will not cause CPU damage.

ASRock

ASRock has stated that their 3.20 BIOS update is unrelated to CPU damage reports. This update improves memory compatibility, preventing CPU “no-boot” issues. This allows ASRock’s motherboards to boot with all AMD Ryzen 9000 series CPUs.
