ASUS launches its Retro-inspired ROG Crosshair 2006 motherboard
AMD X870E just became Retro – Meet the ASUS ROG Crosshair 2006
ASUS has officially listed its ROG Crosshair 2006 motherboard on its website. This motherboard celebrates the 20th anniversary of ROG by harkening back to 2006 with a retro copper aesthetic with classic ROG blue elements.
What we have here is a mixture of retro motherboard design and modern PC features. The Crosshair 2006 is an AMD X870E motherboard that’s made for modern AMD Ryzen processors. It also features advanced features that the PC builders of 2006 could only dream of. This motherboard has an OLED screen, support for CPUs with 5+ GHz clock speeds, ad up to 256GB of DDR5 memory.
Modern hardware with a classic aesthetic
In basic terms, we have modern hardware with a classic aesthetic. That’s perfect for anyone who wants a retro-themed system. Just looking at the new ROG Crosshair 2006 and the original that inspired it, we can see how much motherboard design has changed over the years. While having four DIMM slots remains the norm, motherboard heatsinks have grown dramatically in size, and power requirements have risen sharply. Additionally, we can see how PCIe configuration has changed, with modern motherboards often focusing on fewer, faster, PCIe slots to focus on newer features like M.2 NVMe storage support.
The ROG Crosshair 2006 supports AMD’s Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000 series processors. The motherboard features a 20+2+2 power stage design and five total M.2 slots. It also features modern ASUS features, such as the company’s AIO Q-Connector.
Below, we can see that the ASUS ROG Crosshair 2006 also has a retro-style box design that looks nothing like modern ASUS motherboard boxes. If I saw this box in the wild, I’d have thought it was from the early 2000s, not 2026. Yes, I feel old just saying that…
Team ROG will showcase new products at Computex 2026. For now, we can only guess what ASUS will unveil at the event. Will we see more new motherboards? Perhaps some new laptops, monitors, and portables?
ASUS’ ROG Booth at Computex 2026 will be in the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center, Hall 1 (4th Floor), at Booth M0504. The booth will be open from June 2nd–5th, 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. (GMT+8).
