Delidded AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPUs are now available from Thermal Grizzly
Thermal Grizzly is now selling delidded Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPUs, and they have a 2-year warranty
Starting today, Thermal Grizzly have started selling delidded processors, starting with AMD’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D. Better still, these CPUs will be available with a two-year warranty from Thermal Grizzly.
CPU delidding has been incredibly popular among PC enthusiasts and overclockers. By removing the IHS (integrated heatspreaders) of CPUs, users can mount cooling solutions directly to the silicon dies of processors. This can enable higher levels of cooling performance and unlock increased overclocking headroom for users.
This is not an AMD-sanctioned project. AMD knows nothing about Thermal Grizzly’s CPU delidding efforts. The warranty for these GPUs comes from Thermal Grizzly, not AMD. After all, the delidding process cancels AMD’s original CPU warranty.
Delidding is a well-known practice among PC enthusiasts that involves removing the heat spreader from the processor. Thermal Grizzly provides specialized tools like the Delid-Die-Mate for delidding, as well as Direct-Die cooling solutions (Mycro Direct-Die coolers, High Performance Heatspreader) designed specifically for delidded CPUs. While delidding and using the right cooling solutions can significantly reduce processor temperatures under load, the process is not without risks and voids the CPU’s manufacturer warranty.
To eliminate this risk for our customers, we now offer the TG Delidded CPU series – a lineup of pre-delidded processors. The series launches with the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, with additional models, such as the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D, to be added at a later date. After delidding and thorough cleaning, each processor undergoes a functionality test. The results of this test are documented, and a screenshot of the test is saved on a USB stick, which is included with the TG Delidded CPU. Additionally, the USB stick contains a microscope image of the delidded processor.
The delidded CPU is best used with Direct-Die cooling solutions such as the Mycro Direct-Die, Mycro Direct-Die Pro, or the High Performance Heatspreader. For optimal thermal transfer, we highly recommend using Conductonaut Extreme on the CPU die or chiplets. However, the original heat spreader can still be used, and it is included with the TG Delidded CPU.]
TG Delidded CPUs are exclusively available through the Thermal Grizzly Shop.
Essentially, Thermal Grizzly is taking the dangers of the delidding process upon itself. This gives consumers a way to benefit from CPU delidding without any of its dangers. While Thermal Grizzly’s $712.95 (US) asking price for a Ryzen 7 9800X3D seems high, this price is what allows Thermal Grizzly to offer a 2-year warranty.
In the future, Thermal Grizzly plans to offer more delidded CPU options. This includes AMD’s upcoming Ryzen 9 9950X3D. Intel CPU options will also be considered if there is sufficient demand. Currently, there is no demand for pre-delidded Core Ultra 200 series Intel CPUs.
