Delidded Ryzen 7 9800X3D showcases changes to next-gen AMD 3D V-Cache tech

Cache under CPU – CPU delid highlights major change to AMD’s new X3D gaming CPUs

Wccftech has gotten a glimpse of a delidded Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU. In the image above, we can see a major change for AMD’s latest X3D tech. This change to AMD’s V-Cache technology could be the reason behind the Ryzen 7 9800X3D and its improved performance over its predecessor.

Based on leaked marketing materials for their latest X3D gaming CPUs, AMD’s new X3D CPUs run at higher clock speeds and are cooler than their predecessors. According to @9550Pro, AMD has moved its 3D V-Cache below its CPU cores. Previously, AMD’s 3D V-Cache sat on top of its primary CPU component. This places the hot parts of AMD’s CPUs at the top, resulting in less thermal resistance. As a result, AMD’s new X3D gaming CPUs should run cooler than before.

Below, we have an image of a delidded Ryzen 9 7950X3D. We can see that one of its chiplets has three silicon dies on top of it. These chiplets cannot be seen on a delidded Ryzen 7 9800X3D, suggesting a major change to AMD’s 3D V-Cache tech.

One exciting thing about AMD’s new 3D V-Cache tech is that it opens the door to a potential “V-Cache Sandwich” design. AMD could put 3D V-Cache on both sides of future CPU designs. That said, AMD could likely deliver similar results with a stack of two (or more) 3D V-Cache chips on one side of a CPU die.
