Huge Intel 86-core CPU with 336MB of L3 Cache Leaks

Intel’s Granite Rapids Xeon 698X CPU could be a real Threadripper competitor

Intel’s Granite Rapids (GNR-WS) Xeon 698X workstation processor has been spotted, and it is colossal. With 172 threads, this new 86-core Intel processor is a multi-threaded beast. Furthermore, it has a huge 336MB L3 cache and a listed base frequency of 4.6 GHz.

A Geekbench 6.5 score for this new Intel processor has leaked, with the CPU achieving a score of 2532 points and 21030 points in its single-threaded and multi-threaded tests. These are incredibly high scores, though it remains to be seen whether this score reflects Intel’s Xeon 698X CPU operating at its full potential.

Based on the slide below, Intel’s 86-core workstation GPU is two of Intel’s Granite compute dies. Currently, it is unknown if Intel plans to create a workstation-grade CPU with three compute tiles and up to 128 CPU cores.

Intel has lost significant ground in the workstation CPU market. Today, AMD Threadripper CPUs are the preferred choice for high-core-count workstation CPUs. If Intel wants to regain the market, it needs a strong product. With Granite Ridge Workstation CPUs, Intel could set itself on a path to recovery. However, Intel will need to deliver strong performance levels and pricing to achieve this.
