Xbox Disc-to-Digital is now official, and it arrives very soon
Microsoft officially unveils Xbox’s Disc-to-Digital program
Microsoft has officially unveiled its Xbox Disc-to-Digital program, giving gamers a way to digitise their physical game collections and enjoy the benefits of both physical and digital media.
When you insert a supported game into an Xbox, it associates a digital copy with that console. This gives gamers digital access to those games until they insert the disc into another Xbox. This works for supported games on Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles, making the game usable digitally on those consoles and through Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud. All the perks of digital with physical media. Better still, the game still works exactly as it did before.
Xbox plans to roll out this feature to Xbox Insiders next week on August 31st. At launch, the feature will support “thousands of titles”, with more titles on the way. Most Xbox One and Xbox Series games will support this feature. Sadly, original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles do not support Disc-to-Digital.
Today we are introducing a feature that brings the benefits of digital to physical discs, giving players more flexibility in how they access and play supported games across the XBOX ecosystem. XBOX Insiders can begin testing next week on August 31.
This is part of our broader commitment to game preservation. As technology, devices, and distribution continue to evolve, preserving access to the games people own matters more than ever.
Most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support this new feature. Players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an XBOX One or XBOX Series X console and launching the game. Once the entitlement is claimed, you can experience the benefits of digital, including XBOX Play Anywhere and XBOX Cloud Gaming where supported, while your physical disc continues to work exactly as it always has.
We’re starting with thousands of titles, and we’ll continue to add more over time. While not every title will be available at launch, this is an important step toward a future where players can have greater confidence that the games they buy remain with them for years to come.

Your physical game library is more than a collection of discs. It holds years of memories and stories worth preserving. It’s currently unknown whether Xbox’s next-generation console, Project Helix, will support physical media, but Microsoft’s language implies the system could be digital only. Microsoft says it will make it easier for game libraries to “move forward” with players. This implies that moving disc-based libraries would otherwise be difficult.
With Sony moving away from physical media, it could become challenging for Xbox to source Blu-ray drives for its next-generation console. Many companies have moved away from disc drive production, and Xbox alone can’t keep the medium alive. That said, it would be great if Microsoft created a disc-drive add-on for its system, or somehow made a disc-based Xbox Helix console.
