Intel Core Ultra 4000 Nova Lake CPUs reportedly lock max clock speeds to 5.1 GHz max at over 90°C
Intel’s upcoming Nova Lake CPUs reportedly lock down clock speeds at 90°C
Intel’s next-generation Core Ultra 4000 series Nova Lake CPUs will reportedly introduce a maximum CPU clock-speed lock when processor thermals exceed 90°C. According to the leaker Jaykihn, Intel’s Nova Lake clock speeds will be limited to a maximum of 5.1 GHz when this temperature is surpassed. The leaker also claimed that 90°C isn’t the TJMax temperature of Intel’s new CPUs, so this isn’t standard thermal throttling behaviour.
If this report is correct, Intel Nova Lake CPU users will want to ensure that they have strong enough cooling to keep their CPUs below 90 degrees Celsius. Failing to do so would limit maximum CPU performance. While the maximum CPU clock speeds of Nova Lake are unknown, they are almost certainly higher than 5.1 GHz.
It has been claimed that users cannot adjust this 90-degree thermal threshold. This means that cooling performance will be a vital aspect of Intel Nova Lake systems. There is no workaround for this limitation, so strong cooling is essential.
Preliminary.
Nova Lake -S desktop processors will universally limit the maximum core frequency to 5.1GHz when above 90C.
This is separate behavior from traditional TJMax thermal throttling at 100C.
Alike TJMax, this temperature threshold cannot be shifted upwards.

Right now, the impact of this 5.1 GHz limitation is unknown. Intel’s Nova Lake CPU clock speeds are unknown, so it is unclear how big a drop to 5.1 GHz would be. Additionally, it is unknown how hot-running Intel Nova Lake CPUs are. If it’s easy to keep Nova Lake CPUs cool, a 90-degree thermal limit won’t be a problem for most users. If these CPUs run hot, such a thermal limit could be a problem for PC enthusiasts.
Cooling matters
Ultimately, if this thermal limit exists, Nova Lake CPU users will need adequate cooling to ensure maximum CPU performance. If systems hit the limit, maximum CPU clock speeds will be reduced, and system performance will suffer. For this reason, high-end Nova Lake buyers will likely need to invest in strong cooling solutions to get the most from their CPUs.
