Second Ryzen 7 9800X3D user has CPU burn out on MSI motherboard

Two AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPUs have burned out, and both were installed on an MSI MAG X870 TOMAHAWK motherboard

Over on the Quazarzone forums, another Ryzen 7 9800X3D user has reported CPU burn out. This follows yesterday’s reveal of a similar incident, with both users owning an MSI X870 Tomahawk motherboard.

MSI has confirmed that they are investigating this issue. So far, MSI’s motherboard team has only replicated this issue when CPUs are improperly installed. However, MSI is actively investigating other ways that may reproduce this issue.

Below is an image from the second user who reported CPU burn out issues with their X870 Tomahawk motherboard. Note that there are deformations in its CPU socket. These deformations may have been created by an improperly installed CPU. Alternatively, this motherboard could be using an already deformed CPU socket.

It remains to be seen if this CPU burn out issue is widespread or if it is exclusive to a bad batch of MSI Tomahawk motherboards. So far, it looks like Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU purchasers have no need to worry. The issue is currently isolated to two users that use identical motherboards. Beyond that, both motherboards have signs of either deformed CPU sockets or incorrect CPU installation.
