AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU burned out for unlucky user

AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU burned out on new X870 motherboard

AMD’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D has arrived and is a smash hit. The CPU is sold out at most retailers, meaning most would-be buyers must wait until December or January to purchase this processor. Sadly, one user of this new AMD Ryzen CPU hasn’t had a great time with their 9800X3D, as their CPU burned out on their new X870 motherboard.

Currently, it is unknown if this issue is an isolated incident or one that may affect several processors. Images of this burned our Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU have been shared on Reddit. Note that one shows a damaged CPU socket, suggesting that a defective motherboard or a bad CPU installation may have caused this issue. Below you can see problems with the top right side of the CPU socket, specifically around its edge. This damage may prevent CPUs from being installed correctly.

For now, this should be treated as an isolated incident. Only one CPU is known to have had this issue. Additionally, it seems likely that it wasn’t caused by a CPU fault. As such, Ryzen 7 9800X3D users shouldn’t be worried about this happening to their system. This issue needs to apply to several CPUs/users before we can conclude that there is a CPU-specific issue.

When AMD launched its Ryzen 7 7800X3D, there was an issue where high SoC voltages damaged CPUs and motherboards. This does not appear to be a repeat of this issue.
