Sony’s PS6 will be turbocharged by AMD’s X3D tech – leaker claims
Sony’s reportedly adding AMD’s game-changing X3D technology to their next PlayStation
According to a new report from Chiphell, Sony plans to use AMD’s X3D technology on its next-generation PlayStation 6 (PS6) console. This is the same technology that boosts AMD’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU (review here), the best gaming CPU currently available.
Adding AMD’s X3D tech to Sony’s PS6 could be game-changing for game developers. Typically, gaming consoles use CPUs with very little cache. With PlayStation 6, Sony may give their console a large amount of cache using AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology. This would give Sony’s new console more available on-chip memory and a lot of additional bandwidth. For CPUs, this allows more data to be stored on-chip, allowing it to be accessed quickly. This tech can accelerate gaming workloads significantly, allowing Sony to deliver “next-generation” CPU performance.
While AMD’s X3D tech makes the most sense with Sony’s PS6 CPU, there is also a chance that it could be implemented onto the console’s GPU as a form of AMD’s GPU “Infinity Cache”. This provides similar benefits to a CPU-based cache, providing more on-chip memory for fast access while providing tonnes of memory bandwidth. Will Sony use 3D stacked caches on both their PS6 CPU and GPU?
In a previous leak, it was also reported that Sony would power its PlayStation 6 console with AMD’s UDNA graphics architecture. This GPU architecture follows AMD’s RDNA 4 architecture. Sony’s PlayStation 5 Pro GPU uses elements of AMD’s RDNA 4 graphics architecture, but not all of it.Â
The problem with AMD’s 3D stack memory technology is it’s expensive. AMD Ryzen X3D CPUs are much more costly than their non-X3D counterparts. Regardless, Sony might need this tech to deliver a generational leap in CPU gaming performance. After all, fast data access has become an increasingly important aspect of game performance.
