AMD RDNA 5 desktop GPUs to reportedly approach 4GHz speeds

Leakers are speculating that AMD’s RDNA 5 GPUs could approach 4GHz clock speeds and surpass it with overclocking

Leakers have started speculating that AMD’s desktop RDNA 5 graphics chips could be the first gaming GPUs to approach 4GHz clock speeds, delivering speeds far beyond today’s AMD RDNA 4 GPUs.

While leaker KeplerL2 claims AMD’s RDNA 5 GPUs are targeting clock speeds of 3.1-3.4 GHz, other sources say AMD’s desktop GPUs will reach higher speeds. RedGamingTech has claimed that he “was hearing that some parts might even reach 4 GHz”. He also cited another leaker who claimed that “all the desktop parts are mid-high 3s (3GHz).

AMD’s official boost clock speed for its RX 9070 XT is 2.97 GHz, making mid-to-high 3GHz clock speeds a major increase for RDNA 5 desktop GPUs. At 3.1-3.4GHz, RDNA 5 would have clock speeds 4.3% to 14.4% higher than an RX 9070 XT. At 3.4-3.9GHz (the mid-to-high 3GHz range), AMD’s clock speed increase with RDNA 5 would be 14.4-31.3%. That’s a substantial clock-speed increase.

If these leaks are accurate, 4GHz clock speeds could be possible with RDNA 5 GPUs with overclocking. That said, it remains to be seen if today’s mid-to-high 3GHz clock speed rumours are accurate. As always, take leaks with a pinch of salt.

Are near-4GHz clock speeds possible for RDNA 5?

Rumour has it that AMD’s RDNA 5 GPUs will utilise TSMC’s N3P (enhanced 3nm) lithography node. That’s a notable leap from the 4nm-class node used for today’s RDNA 5 graphics chips. Furthermore, AMD has proven that large generational clock-speed increases are possible with its Zen 3-to-Zen 4 leap. Reports also suggest AMD is targeting a large clock-speed boost with its upcoming Zen 6 desktop CPUs.

Raising clock speeds would be hugely beneficial for AMD’s RDNA 5 GPUs. After all, a rising tide raises all boats. While architectural enhancements and new features can boost performance, higher clock speeds can improve performance across the board. If AMD can deliver large clock-speed boosts with RDNA 5, it could deliver some of the largest generational performance leaps in Radeon history.
